Volunteering: Independence

Today I had my first 'shift' on the ward without any supervision, or another ward helper. This was quite daunting to me as my mind seemed to go blank trying to remember exactly what I was meant to do on the wards. However after setting up the trolley for tea and speaking to a few patients, I was feeling much more comfortable and forgot I was working alone. It taught me I don't need to rely on other people and to be confident in my own decisions.

Also, this week I had a long chat with one of the nurses who gave me a bit advice, and generally asked about my aspirations. Although I was enjoying my independence in my own role, it was really comforting to have someone to speak to and look out for me. I like being able to work alone, as well as being part of a team.
